Casa Summer Season Is Almost Here!
The good folks at Parkwood Youth Organization have made Field 10 available to us this summer for a mini Casa season.

We will run this mini league much like our winter season at Starfinder. There will be two divisions, Primera and Segunda with Primera competing on Saturday mornings and Segunda Sunday mornings.

The cost of this league will be $250 per team plus $50 weekly ref fees and run 7 weeks (5 regular season games plus 2 playoff games).

The format will be 9 players a side and 1 hour games. Substitutions on the fly.

We are looking to kick off the league June 23rd with finals weekend being August 4th and 5th.

We are limiting registration to 12 teams (6 per division) and will operate on a first come, first serve basis. The first 12 teams to send $250 via PayPal to treasurer@phillysoccer.org will be guaranteed a place. Please remember to indicate your team name and division preference in the notes section.

As always, any questions, please contact me at president@phillysoccer.org

Casa Winter 2012 Final Table!
Winter Week 10.docx (13.66 K)The second annual Casa Winter Season was a great success with both divisions, Primera and Segunda, being hotly contested.

Congratulations to KS Cracovia and Spartan FC for taking Primera and Segunda, respectively.

Cracovia went undefeated to take their first Winter crown and Spartan finished with an incredible +41 goal differential to edge Revolution 76 for the Segunda title.

From what I gathered, everyone really enjoyed staying fit this winter and competing against Casa rivals.

Thanks to Mark and John for refereeing and the Starfinder Foundation for making this another wonderful winter season!  We hope to see even more Casa outdoor teams take advantage of this great opportunity next year...

Casa Mourns the Loss of One of Its Family Members
I am deeply sorry to report the news that our Primera Commissioner, ShaneKelly, was murdered Saturday night in what appears to be a robbery gone wrong.Shane was returning home after an evening out celebrating with his girlfriendwhen an armed robber apparently shot him in the chest while fleeing.  Shane wasrushed to Temple University Hospital were he was later pronounced dead.

Shane was a huge supporter of the Casa Soccer League and a member of its boardof officers for two years before his sudden passing.  However, Shane's presencein the community extends much further than soccer.  As one of the leaders ofthe fraternal organization, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Shane constantly gaveof himself and his time to several charities that benefit NortheasternPhiladelphia.

Casa Soccer League will be honoring Shane's dedication to soccer and ourorganization by renaming the Primera Cup, "Kelly Cup" and donating to amemorial fund of the Kelly Family's choosing.  Additionally, this Saturday'smatches will be prefaced with a minute's silence to honor Shane and the lastingimpression he made on all that crossed his path.  We ask that all line up priorto kickoff and be respectful of this.

While this shocking and troubling news is difficult to process at this momentin time, I hope it provides us with a bit of perspective as to what is trulyimportant in life and allows us to remember we're all family.  I hope thissense of togetherness can be more evident than it has been on the soccer fieldthe past few weeks.

I know Shane would have wanted the league to continue its success so I ask thatwe all continue to honor his memory with our commitment to service.

    Shane Kelly will be missed.

                                     Very Truly Yours,

Eric “Manz” Riley

Eric Riley is a 6th grader in the Clearview Regional School District. In June 2010, he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. It was located in a sensitive part of his brain, making it difficult to remove. That August, doctors removed 90 percent of the tumor. Eric then started on chemo- therapy treatments. After the treatments were unsuccessful, the doctors decided to surgically remove the rest of the tumor. The tumor was removed, but with the possibility of the cancer returning, he must get frequent MRI’s to test for cancer.

All Games For Saturday, April 23rd: CANCELED.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast never improved and reports are now calling for heavy rain beginning tonight and ending tomorrow afternoon with scattered thundershowers at times.

The conditions at both Pennypack Park and Parkwood will most likely be muddy and dangerous.

Therefore, all scheduled games are canceled and will be made up at the end of the season.

We were going to wait to make the call but in light of it being a holiday weekend for some, we thought we would give a bit of advance notice for those players wishing to rearrange schedules.

Please be safe everyone, enjoy the holiday and we'll see you in one week.

Cheers,

Weather Notification
This weekend is calling for rain again, possibly up to one inch tomorrow.

In the event that we need to cancel all or part of the games, typically three things will happen:

1.  A message will appear in the News headlines on the homepage.

2.  An email will be sent out to team administrators.

3.  Our Twitter feed (casasoccer) will display a message regarding cancellation.

Please make sure at least two team administrators follow us/friend us on Twitter/Facebook.  It's the fastest way to get information out to league members.

Of course, this isn't an exact science and as you know, the weather can be very unpredictable.  However, we will do our best to notify you across all the forms of technology as expediently as possible.

Now let's all do the no rain dance!

Cheers,

Important Changes to the Volunteer Board
On February 1, 2010, several important changes to the volunteer board of the Casa Soccer League will take place.

Dan Walsh, our Vice-President, will be stepping down and will be replaced by Mike Servedio.

Mike, our Treasurer, will be replaced by our current Tercera commissioner, John Horn.

The position of Tercera commissioner is therefore open and we are looking for volunteers to fill the void.  Please email me at president@phillysoccer.org should you be interested.

Additionally, May Riona and Andres Guitterez have joined the board as Director of Operations and Fundraising Officer, respectively.

Congrats and good luck to Mike, John, May and Andres!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dan Walsh, our outgoing VP for his incredible service to Casa over the past couple of years.  It's no exaggeration to say that the league would not have continued without his tireless efforts.  He will be missed.

Please Support Casa Partner Starfinder Foundation
Did you ever think that soccer could change children’s lives? Starfinder is doing just that—using soccer to help children in underserved communities. Casa Soccer League proudly supports Starfinder. Please make a gift today to support their valuable work: http://starfinderfoundation.org/top-menu/donate.html

To learn more about this great organization, click here: www.starfinderfoundation.org, or read on. Their full request letter follows.
______________________________________________________________________

Dear friend,

Did you ever think that soccer could change children’s lives? Did you ever imagine that futbol, the global sport, could help children in Philadelphia with limited options reach their fullest potential?

We know it can, and we live it every day. Through programs that blend soccer with education and opportunity, Starfinder helps youth find the star in themselves. We help children develop the tools necessary to succeed in school, in their communities, and in their lives. And soccer is the hook – a starting point on the pathway to success.

I’m writing to ask for your support. By investing in our work, you will be nurturing young people in need. You’ve probably heard these sobering statistics:

-> 46% of Philadelphia public school 6th graders fail to graduate from high school.

-> Only 1 in 10 students who entered a Philadelphia public high school in 1999 had earned a two-or four-year college degree 10 years later.

Meanwhile numerous studies show that students who complete high school and continue their education do significantly better economically. Not only do they enjoy a better quality of life and a wider array of opportunities, but success at a young age can make the difference between future dependence on public assistance versus contributing economically to the community we all share.

But this is about more than just dollars.

Youth in underserved communities are full of aspiration, but often lack the support of adults and institutions to help them map out and take the steps necessary to achieve their dreams. Starfinder provides an engaging, structured pathway for success and encourages its participants to aspire to lives of distinction. In the last two years 100% of our seniors graduated high school and over 80% continued on to further education.

Please click here to support our work: http://starfinderfoundation.org/top-menu/donate.html.

Special Thank You Gifts:
> For a gift of $50 or more you will receive a Starfinder scarf.
> For a gift of $100 or more you will be entered into a drawing for a soccer ball signed by the US Men's World Cup team.

Check out these thank you gifts here: http://starfinderfoundation.org/support-sf/2010-annual-campaign.html#gifts.

Our programs for 6-18 year olds are fun, engaging, and physical. Soccer is the hook, and learning happens through a wide variety of experiences on the field and in the classroom. Geography, world cultures, health and nutrition, reading, media literacy, SAT and college prep, problem solving, and decision making are core components of our curriculum. We cultivate long-term relationships with our youth, recognizing that greater depth leads to greater impact.

Last year, we served 720 young people, most of whom had 80% or better attendance. We must be doing something right because our participants come back season after season, year after year.

This summer, for the first time, we trained and hired twenty-one of our Senior Leaders (teen participants) to work as counselors in our six-week summer camps in five Philadelphia communities. During the training, the teens honed their communication, group facilitation, and public speaking skills. They learned how to deliver the Starfinder curriculum and earned a youth coaching license from EPYSA. And then they got the “real” leadership training—on the field with the kids.

We think the summer was a huge success. But don’t take our word for it. See what our teens had to say:

“I found my voice on the field and became less timid to speak.” – Nury Ortiz

“Working at Starfinder was also my very first job. I learned how to do timesheets and how to ride the bus all by myself. Wow, that was really a big deal for me and my mom.” – Giselle Gravatt

“Working this summer made me feel that I was important in the community.” – Mohamed Bah

“This [summer] gave me more confidence with the children and with myself which will help prepare me for life outside of school and soccer.” – Sammy Ortiz

“I never knew in a thousand years that I could ever change a person’s life, especially a kid’s life.” – Isha Sesay

Your support will help us continue to set kids on a path to success, equipped with the tools to make healthy choices and become leaders in their communities… or wherever their dreams take them.

Thank you for investing in the success of our youth. http://starfinderfoundation.org/top-menu/donate.html.

Sincerely,

Stephen H. Baumann
President & CEO

CASA FAMILY: REFEREE MIKE LAYCHOCK NEEDS OUR HELP
Casa is Spanish for "house" and we've always viewed the league as one big family. Well, one of our family members is need of our help. Referee Mike Laychock recently suffered a heart attack that has left him unable to referee and support his family. Casa referees Dennis Denard and Pete Hulayew have organized a benefit fundraiser for Mike and his family in Jenkintown. In lieu of attendance, you can make a check out to "Mike Laychock" and send it to Pete at the address listed below.

I know we'll all come together and rally around Mike, a great referee and even better human being.

Thank you.

Fall '09 Season Wrap-Up
With an unprecedented number of games canceled in the fall due to inclement weather, the season was truncated to just the regular season. As such, the regular season record was used to determine promotion/relegation for the spring, with the top team in each division named champion. Congrats to the following for winning their division:

Primera
Deportivo Arsenal (6-1-2)

Segunda
Real Optimus (6-3-0)

Tercera
Organized Chaos FC (7-1-1)

Abierto
Park Towne United (7-1-1)

We realize this isn't how the league normally operates, but this was literally one of the wettest falls in Philadelphia history and quite frankly we were fortunate to even be able to get all the regular season games played. We greatly appreciate the flexibility and understanding everyone has shown and we look forward to getting back in action next season.

While you're here, be sure to also check out the updated Trophy Room, Stats Vault and Media Album.

New online Philly soccer publication launched
Today marks the launch of The Philly Soccer Page, a new online publication produced by Casa.

The Philly Soccer Page, found at http://www.phillysoccerpage.com, takes a look at the world of soccer from a Philadelphia perspective. The site covers the region's two new professional teams, its various amateur leagues (Casa included!), international and domestic soccer, and various aspects of the region's soccer culture, ranging from pickup games to pubs.

Nine players across various Casa teams have initially volunteered to produce the blog, including three current and former journalists, one local soccer coach, and the writer of a local soccer newsletter who's also writing a book about Philadelphia's soccer history.

Thanks to all of those who have stepped up to make this happen. We hope you enjoy it.

Spring '09 Finals Recap
What a day of soccer! The Casa finals were a veritable non-stop highlight reel across all divisions with each game providing many exciting moments and lots of great technical displays. Passions and hopes ran high, but at the end of the game there could be only one winner:

Abierto

Vietnamese United was brand new to Casa this year but quickly established winning ways, holding their own against tough competition and coming into the playoffs as the #3 seed with only two losses. Meanwhile, the Lot Lizards gained a reputation as a dominant force - with size, skill and speed that combined to get them the #1 seed. The teams had seen each other twice before in the regular season with a 0-0 tie and a 2-0 win to the Lot Lizards. Would Vietnamese be able to find the net this go around?

The Vietnamese made it clear they were there to win, stringing together crisp passes and streaking runs while challenging every 50-50 ball with fierce intensity. They suffered their first set-back early in the 1st half though as a penalty kick was converted by LL and they went down 1-0. Nevertheless, they remained undeterred and stepped up the pressure with a relentless assault. Finally penetrating the tough Lizard defense, some rough contact in the box led to their own PK opportunity. But the Lot Lizards are #1 for a reason and a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net was pushed to the post with a miraculous save by the fully extended keeper:

With the momentum clearly shifted to the Lizards, they seized control and never looked back. A few minutes later a flawlessly executed bicycle kick found the net and they took a daunting 2-0 lead into halftime. Another insurance goal on a surgically-precise free-kick mid-way through the second half sealed the deal and the Lizards claimed their first division title.

Tercera

Going undefeated into the playoffs, perhaps NewPhillyUnited was a bit overconfident in their quarterfinal match up. Having trounced last placed FC Spartans 7-2 in their regular season game they almost faced a major upset and barely came away with a 2-1 squeaker. Things didn't get any easier in the semis as they narrowly escaped past Gremio FBPA in PKs. #3 seed Sons of Ben Athletic took a similar path, also advancing to the finals in PKs. Clearly it was shaping up to be a close one.

A game played predominately at mid-field, neither team was giving much space as both struggled to find a rhythm. Two of the divisions strongest defenses were on full alert, stifling progress at every turn. With an average of less than 1 goal allowed per game for both teams in the regular season, no one wanted to be behind early and half time saw a 0-0 score.

As the minutes of the second half ticked by it was beginning to look like the game was heading into PKs, just as the teams experienced in the semi-finals. Both teams continued to look for openings and it seemed they realized that if either team wanted to score in regulation that they wouldn't be able to walk it in. A well-hit, low shot from NPU connected and put them up 1-0. With newly established confidence, the shots then came with increased frequency and NPU were able to put another one in off of a rebound and win the game 2-0.

Segunda

The Cinderella story of the playoffs was clearly Penn United. At #6, they were the only team in the finals across the entire League that wasn't a top three seed. Playing against #1 seed and former Primera team KS Cracovia, it would seem they would be seriously outgunned and the fairytale story ending just short of happily ever after.

With the league's leading scorer on their team, KC Cravovia stuck to the basics, confident that the goals would come. Indeed, early in the first half a breakaway culminated with an elegant outside of the foot shot placed in the upper corner and KS Cracovia looking every bit the champions.

But Penn United had been behind more than once before this season and appeared unfazed. Just a short while later they came back with a nifty goal of their own and tied it up 1-1. Despite a few balls being cleared last-second from the goal mouth, neither team yielded any more goals in regulation, and it came down to PKs. Back and forth it went and with a fluke miss by KS Cracavia, Penn United had the chance to win it with the 5th shot:

Penn United won it all and found themselves vaulted into the 1st division for the fall.

Primera

Atop the 1st division both teams came ready to play. As if the two teams were a league unto themselves, The Allstars won it all last spring, only to cede the crown in the fall to Deportivo Arsenal. Coming into the finals at #2 and #1 respectively, neither side had any intention of going home empty handed.

The action lasted from beginning to end with Deportivo drawing first blood. Not wanting to provide any chance for rest, the Allstars blazing speed caught Deportivo off guard and a blitzing offense capitalized on a loose ball in the box and evened the score. Each team would find the net once more as the tension continued to build. A few set plays almost panned out but the stalemate would last through regulation and off to PKs it went.

Perhaps it was the wind, exhaustion or just bad luck, but two missed PKs by the usually sure-footed Allstars were more than enough to give Deportivo the opportunity they needed to seal the victory and take back-to-back Primera titles. They now enter the fall season with the opportunity to be the first 3-peat team and establish themselves as a Casa dynasty.

Time Changes and Note About Playoffs
All games on or after 10/25 have been moved up 20 minutes to compensate for the shortened daylight hours. These changes are reflected on both the Master Schedule and individual team schedules.

Regarding playoffs, as of the last day of the regular season (currently Nov. 1) all rosters will be locked and no changes/additions will be permitted. For EACH playoff game all players will be required to provide a government-issued photo ID.

The referees will have a copy of the ACTIVE roster. Only players on this roster who have a jersey with a MATCHING # and corresponding ID will be permitted to play. That means that if a player does not have a listed jersey # on the roster by the end of the regular season they will not be permitted to play, no exceptions. All players have the ability to enter in this information as do you. Players should also be sure that their roster name matches their ID.

Our new photo album allows anyone to easily share their photos with the league and we want to see them! From now through the month of October, upload your shots (as many as you want) from any game to our photo album and you'll be automatically entered. What makes a good photo? Here is a good resource for some general guidelines to follow. And don't forget to add a title description!

Good luck!

Team Page Contest Winners Announced
Our first contest with the new website ended with great results. It's impressive what some teams came up with both in terms of content and creativity - you didn't make this easy!

After a thorough review though, a clear winner emerged - NewPhillyUnited!

Among their page's highlights:

*A top-notch logo
*Embedded video (my favorite Nike commercial no less!)
*A mini ad campaign in their photo section
*Use of the player of the week function
*Player head shots and bios
*Notice about practices

Our two runners-up were Real Knockers and Real Mensches who both did an awesome job loading their pages with quality material in all aspects and supplied some great info on both the team and the players.

I'd also like to give mention to Calamity!, who came up with the idea of integrating a theme song into their page. For a team that only joined us this summer with all new players, they are doing a heck of a job getting organized. Now that we all know what's possible, let's aim to make every site worth a visit.

Captains - drop me a line at president@phillysoccer.org to claim your prizes.

And a reminder, we are now accepting all entries into our photo contest. It's free, easy and you could win one of several gift certificates to Modell's Sporting Goods on 15th and Chestnut (thanks to Briana, our PR Chairperson for working her magic there). More details here.

Let's hope we luck-out and get some clear skies this Saturday. See you on the field.
