Division Abierto - News
Somebody finally beat Park Towne United, and it means Abierto has the closest race in all of Casa with just one week till the playoffs.
Krev slipped by PTU 1-0 on Javier Bonilla's goal, dropping PTU into a first place tie with Marlton (though PTU has played one less game). PTU, which has scored the least goals in the division but also given up the fewest, will try to bounce back this week against Sons of Ben Union, who lost 3-2 last week to Brighton. This week, Brighton will try to dent another top-table team when they play Marlton.
Right now, five teams still have a mathematical chance of finishing in first place, making the season's last two weeks a free-for-all in the race for the guaranteed promotion slot that comes with a regular season title.
Reminder: Wild card matches take place Sunday, Nov. 22, the day after the last regular season games. Playoff seedings will be announced immediately following the late games on Nov. 21.

This week has a few matchups of top-table teams, with 2nd place SoBU taking on 3rd place Bayern Makefield at 8:50 a.m. on Field 1 and 4th place Marlton FC playin 5th place Krev at 4:30 p.m. on Field 7.
Rain forced the postponement of last week's Park Towne United – PA Baracus game, so that's in the process of being rescheduled.
The other games went off, albeit with one forfeit when Marlton FC didn't turn out a full team against Sidewinders. Krev and Sons of Ben Union played to a 3-3 draw, while Bayern Makefield pushed into third place with a 6-2 win over Brighton.

Krev has been docked three points in the standings for playing an ineligible player Saturday against PA Baracus. The point deduction may not show up in the standings, as we're still figuring out whether the web site supports that.
Otherwise, Saturday proved a good day of soccer. Park Towne United eked out another close win Saturday, with goals by Tom Vogdes and Jesse Tyahla earning them a 2-1 victory, and they remain in first place as Abierto's only undefeated team. Sidewinders FC will hope for an upset as they try to break Park Towne's streak this week. Meanwhile, Marlton FC edged Bayern Makefield 3-2, and Sons of Ben Union won 3-1 over Spruce Goose FC, leaving each just behind PTU in the standings.
This week, each team from the table's top half will play a team from the bottom half in a scheduling fluke, with Krev vs. Brighton the closest pairing among them.
Remember, check the updated schedule for game times, which have been moved up a half hour to conserve daylight.

With the table starting to shake out, Abierto has only one remaining team that's won all its games: Park Towne United. They've scored just four goals in three games, but their defense has been lights out, giving up only one goal, tied for the best in all of Casa. They'll try to maintain that streak against FC Recreational Hazards on Saturday. Game time: 11:15, Field 7.
Also, Bayern Makefield and Marlton FC take the field in a match of two 2-1 teams, while mid-table Sons of Ben Union and Spruce Goose FC also have what could be an even match, the only one boasting two returning teams from the spring season.

Krev and Park Towne United have jumped out at the head of the division with two wins in two weeks.
Krev won big Saturday against Sidewinders FC, while Edgar Martinez's goal earned Park Towne a 1-0 victory over a good Marlton FC team. Park Towne will look for a third win this week against an improved Spruce Goose team, which collected a 5-3 win over Brighton on Saturday, while Krev will take on Bayern Makefield, which also won big this week. Both matches are at 1:10, so if you're in the early game, stick around to see how the top of the table does.
Elsewhere, Brendan Clearkin's goal nudged Sons of Ben Union to a 1-0 victory over FC Recreational Hazards on Saturday. SoBU will try to make it two straight this week against Sidewinders, while the Hazards have Marlton at 11:15.

Four new Casa teams won their first matches Saturday as Opening Day finally went off without rain.
John Rossi's two goals led Recreational Hazards to a 3-1 win over Brighton FC, while Park Towne United goalkeeper Brad Ryals stopped 11 of 12 shots to help his squad to a 2-1 defeat of Bayern Makefield. Meanwhile, Marlton FC knocked off Sons of Ben Union 3-2, and Sidewinders FC won 4-2 over PA Baracus.
This week, Sidewinders draw a tough match with K-R-E-V, which won its own match this week 3-1, while Brighton and Spruce Goose face off in this week's only match-up of returning Casa teams.

Opening Day, take 2.
The match of the day has to be the game between two of the most entertainingly named teams in Casa: PA Baracus vs. Spruce Goose FC.
Will Spruce Goose knock out PA Baracus and stuff them in a plane? Or will Baracus pity the fools and cook Spruce’s Goose? Game on at 3:05 p.m. at Pennypack Field 1. Come see whose on-field form matches their off-field wit.
With six new teams, Abierto truly is wide open. Sidewinders FC and Bayern Makefield take the field against each other in the week’s only match-up of new entries, while K-R-E-V looks to be in top form against FC Recreational Hazards after a season away from Casa.
Take note: Some matches this week are at Philadelphia Soccer Club, while others are at Pennypack Park. Check the schedule for details.

The fall season kicks off this Saturday (weather pending), and it looks like a wide open field competing for promotion.
Abierto boasts six teams new to Casa, as well as one returnee. Krev returns to Casa after taking the spring off, hoping to repeat their dominant fall 2008 run that nearly won them promotion to Segunda before ending in surprise upsets and collapse.
Sons of Ben Union and Spruce Goose FC hope to improve upon their first season’s showing, while Brighton seeks to bounce back from a tough spring season that led to relegation from Tercera.
Meanwhile, the six new teams are effectively wild cards. Few outside their teams know how good they are, which could make for an interesting and exciting season in Abierto.
This is the Abierto division’s second season, and last season showed that it can be home to some of the best soccer in all of Casa, thanks to the entries of so many new teams. With 10 teams this season, it’ll be a straightforward round-robin schedule, with the regular season winner and playoff winner gaining promotion.
Good luck this season, and make sure to check the weather hotline -- (267) 324-8272 -- before your games Saturday.
